[Rewatch]: Downton Abbey: A New Era

Downton does meta. The family allows a film crew use their home as a movie set. What a crazy idea, right?

My favorite thing about this movie is its continued parallels between upstairs drama and downstairs drama just like they did in the show. Times are changing and there are threats to ‘the norm’, no matter which end of the staircase you occupy.

[Rewatch]: Downton Abbey

The Crawleys and their staff have been through so much since we first met them in 1912. And all the while Downton Abbey has been the backdrop for the drama. So of course the logical next step would be a royal visit. The King & Queen are coming to dinner!

Downton Abbey is the series I re-watch the most. And I always complete the quest by adding the films to the watchlist. Now for A New Era

[Rewatch]: Clue

Sometimes you just gotta accept a cryptic invite to dinner with five strangers at a creepy mansion. Bonus points if the party includes a murder or two or…more. Just make sure you find the killer before you become the next victim.

My favorite board game got the Hollywood treatment and I am eternally grateful this kooky little production exists.

[Rewatch]: Dan in Real Life

[Rewatch: Thanksgiving Edition] To be fair, this movie has nothing to do with Thanksgiving. But the vibes are right. Dan is a widower who accidentally falls in love with his boyfriend’s new girlfriend at the family’s annual lakeside vacation. Life’s just funny that way sometimes.

[Rewatch]: You’ve Got Mail

[Rewatch: Thanksgiving Edition]. Cozy as a cable-knit sweater in autumn, You’ve Got Mail is one of my fall favs. Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox are enemies in the real world, but falling in love via email. And they have no idea. Rival bookstores, anonymous pen pals, and bouquets of sharpened pencils… what’s not to love?

[Rewatch]: Jack

If you thought Patch Adams was sad, be prepared to have your heart ripped out by Jack. Robin Williams is 10-year-old Jack Powell, a special boy with a rare condition that makes him age 4x faster than normal. This movie probably aged about as well as Big, but only Williams could make this better than it had any right to be.

[Rewatch]: Pride & Prejudice

Never shall I apologize for the frequency in which I rewatch this masterpiece. Especially when I’m using it as a palate cleanser after reading a disgraceful book based on these characters.

[Rewatch]: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Greek Toula falls for non-Greek Ian. And the Portokalos clan have a lot of very loud opinions on the matter. Their love is eventually accepted–even if Ian’s vegetarianism isn’t–and the wedding of extravagance is planned with the whole family pitching in. No seriously. The whole family.

[Rewatch]: Belle

I seem to watch this movie on an annual basis. Timestamp 1:16:09 also gets replayed several times in a row. You can’t stop me.

Based [veeeeeery loosely] on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, a biracial heiress being raised by her Lord Chief Justice uncle and aunt in 18th-centruy England. As her uncle weighs the facts of a slave trader ship insurance claim to pass an important judgement, Belle and her cousin weigh the facts of their respective circumstances while trying to find husbands. Yes it’s messy. But I still think it’s belle.
